The German leader painted a grim picture of Moscow’s actions, labeling them as “a hybrid war” targeting both Germany and the wider region. “Putin is waging an information war against us, a military war against Ukraine, and this aggression threatens us all. Russia stands as an adversary to the political order and stability of our region,” Merz declared. His remarks underscore escalating tensions as Europe braces for multifaceted threats.
In response to a recent surge in drone incidents across Germany and the continent, Merz affirmed that his government is fully cognizant of the dangers. “We are aware of the threat,” he stated, linking the disturbances to Moscow’s strategy. He specifically pointed to the disruption at Munich Airport last weekend, where drone sightings led to operational halts and stranded over 10,000 passengers. On Sunday, Merz suggested Russia’s involvement in these incidents, a claim yet to be substantiated.
Accusing Moscow of attempting to sow fear among Europeans, Merz vowed steadfastness. “Putin seeks to intimidate and instill fear, but we will not be cowed. We will defend ourselves effectively against this menace,” he emphasized.
