DRESDEN, Jan 09 – On Thursday morning, part of downtown Dresden in eastern Germany was evacuated as bomb disposal units prepared to remove a World War II ordnance discovered near the Carola Bridge. The evacuation affects approximately 10,000 residents and workers in the historic Old City district.
A significant portion of the Carola Bridge, a crucial crossing for car and tram traffic over the Elbe River, collapsed early in the morning on September 11, 2024. During the subsequent repair work, workers uncovered the bomb.
4,000 Bombs Dropped on Dresden
The Carola Bridge, originally constructed in 1895, has faced destruction twice. The German army deliberately destroyed it in May 1945 to impede the Soviet advance. The current bridge was rebuilt between 1967 and 1971.
World War II ordnances are frequently unearthed during construction and maintenance in major German cities. Dresden, in particular, endured several bombing campaigns, notably the February 1945 air raids when the Allies dropped 4,000 bombs, devastating the city center and killing 25,000 people.
