India blocks Russian oil tankers subject to U.S. sanctions

India will not permit tankers carrying Russian oil, which are subject to American sanctions, to enter its ports, Bloomberg reported. This decision marks a significant setback for Vladimir Putin’s strategy, as the Indian market has become crucial for Russia following the EU’s abandonment of Russian raw materials due to the invasion of Ukraine.

The effects of the restrictions imposed by Washington on the Russian oil industry last Friday are becoming increasingly evident. India has decided to prohibit the entry of tankers carrying Russian oil that fall under the new sanctions imposed by the USA, according to Bloomberg.

An Indian official confirmed this decision, stating that only ships chartered before January 10 and arriving at their destination ports before March 12 will be allowed to unload at domestic ports.

Moreover, banks will require certificates of origin for the oil to ensure that the supplies do not come from sources under sanctions.
